Bergenia Extract Bergenin Powder

Bergenin Powder, also known as Bergenit, Vakerin, Arolisic acid B, Ardisic acid B, Corylopsin, Cuscutin, Peltaphorin, is a concentrated form of bergenin, a bioactive compound extracted from the whole plant of Bergenia purpurascens, as well as the root, stem, and leaves of Ardisia crispa. It is also found in the thick-leaved Bergenia (B.crassifoloa, Astilbe macroflora).

The pharmacological properties of bergenin include analgesic, sedative, hypnotic, and anxiolytic effects. It has been reported to have weaker analgesic effects compared to pentazocine but stronger than general antipyretic and analgesic drugs. At therapeutic doses, it does not cause respiratory depression or induce smooth muscle spasms in the gastrointestinal tract. Bergenin has been found to be effective in treating chronic persistent pain and visceral dull pain, but less effective for acute severe pain (such as postoperative pain, traumatic pain, etc.) and late-stage cancer pain. It can induce sedation and hypnosis while producing analgesic effects. The exact mechanism of action of bergenin is still being elucidated, but it may be related to the inhibition of the ascending activating system in the brainstem reticular structure and the blockade of dopamine receptors in the brain. Importantly, therapeutic doses of bergenin are non-addictive.
In addition to its analgesic properties, bergenin has been reported to have antitussive effects, a mild impact on the respiratory function of tracheal and lung tissues, anti-inflammatory effects, and skin-whitening and astringent effects by inhibiting tyrosinase activity to prevent melanin formation.
