Horse Chestnut Extract

Horse chestnut extract (commonly abbreviated HCE or HCSE) is derived from the seeds of the horse chestnut tree (Aesculus hippocastanum). It is known for containing a compound called aescin (also spelled escin), which is the most abundant active compound in the extract. Horse chestnut extract has historically been used for various purposes, including as a whitening agent for fabrics and as a soap. More recently, it has been found to be beneficial in disorders of the venous system, particularly chronic venous insufficiency, and has also been used to help with hemorrhoids.

Studies have shown that horse chestnut extract is effective in improving the symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency and reducing edema or swelling. It has been found to be equivalent to using compression stockings for reducing swelling, making it a valuable alternative for individuals who are unable to use compression for various reasons.
The extract works through several mechanisms, including impairing the action of platelets, inhibiting various chemicals in the blood to reduce inflammation and blood pressure, and reducing swelling by constricting vessels of the venous system and slowing the leakage of fluid out of the veins.

While horse chestnut extract is generally well tolerated, it may cause mild side effects such as nausea and abdominal upset. However, caution should be exercised with individuals who are predisposed to bleeding or have coagulation disorders, as well as those taking blood-thinners or glucose-lowering medication, due to potential interactions and contraindications.

Aesculus hippocastanum, the horse chestnut, is a species of flowering plant in the maple, soapberry and lychee family Sapindaceae. It is a large, deciduous, synoecious (hermaphroditic-flowered) tree. It is also called horse-chestnut, European horsechestnut, buckeye, and conker tree. It is not to be confused with the sweet chestnut or Spanish chestnut, Castanea sativa, which is a tree in another family, Fagaceae.
